Here is what happened in class, today, Monday, September 14!

Period 1 and 2

We continued working on completing physical and political maps of the United States. Be prepared for a map quiz on Wednesday! Know the state names and the important land forms on your list!

We began talking about Cornell Notes and practiced this in class.

Independent Reading books needed to be in class today...we also spent some time visiting the library to learn about new systems in place for helping with book selection, and many took this opportunity to check out their first book for this year. We talked about AR levels and choice; we agreed to read at our levels for most books, but also will consider personal choice! Starting today, bring your independent books to class EVERY DAY!! We also talked about the importance of those reading logs...fill out the first part of the form and the author info before you read, and the rest when you finish!

Period 3
We finished sharing our personal histories via our timelines; lots of great storytelling in this group! Following that, we went to the library to be introduced to some new systems in place this year and some of you checked out books. Your first independent reading books needed to be identified by today. If yours was not in class today, bring it tomorrow! You can earn 3 points by having your book in class. We will read for 10 minutes at the beginning of the period tomorrow, Tuesday.

Starting today, you should bring your independent books to class EVERY DAY!! We talked about the importance of those reading logs...fill out the first part of the form and the author info before you read, and the rest when you finish!

Period 5-6
Today I introduced the concept of Cornell Notes (Two column notes) with a PPT and we practiced with Chapter 1 Section 3 in our Social Studies text. We looked at Bloom's Taxonomy and used that to help us formulate questions and key words in the left hand column. We took notes on the Vikings (pages 17 and 18 in class). You will complete page 19 on your own (Cornell style!) and bring them into class tomorrow.

Indpendent Reading books were due in class today! We visited the library and learned about some new systems in place to help with book selection. Starting today, you should bring your independent books to class EVERY DAY!! Tomorrow, you should also bring the reading log with author info filled in. We talked about the importance of those reading logs...fill out the first part of the form and the author info before you read, and the rest when you finish! We discussed author bias and the importantce of knowing something about the author who wrote your book. We also brainstormed reasons why we read.
