Block I
We continued to work on our attack questions, defense briefs and presentation speeches. The debates will occur for our class on Friday and Monday. Dress rehearsal will be Thursday!

Period 3 -
We watched a short video about the life of Mark Twain and created posters in our small groups explaining facts/opinions about him.

Block 2
We continued working on our attack questions, defense briefs and presentation speeches. Our debates will be held on Thursday and Friday of this week! Dress rehearsal will be on Wednesday.

We took our vocab quiz over the words from "Roughing It"; we viewed a video clip of the debate format and worked on refining our research, citing sources and organizing our facts/positions of the topics.

Period 3
We took our vocab quiz, completed our search for ironic passages in "Us and Them" and began looking at idioms. Think about; how often do you use idioms?

We practiced for our vocab test (tomorrow-Friday!). You should each have your individualized study guide to help guide your practice for tonight. We began our literary analysis of "Us and Them" with a focus on irony - to be continued tomorrow in class. We worked on our debate questions - you each have a debate handout with Topics/Arguments and Facts to fill out prior for homework tonight.

Block IWe completed the story, "Roughing It"; turned in your comprehension grids and practiced our vocab ( words are on page 705 in your literature book). Assignments were given out for specific roles in the debate unit; we will continue to reseach next week - debates are tentatively scheduled for January 27 -18 - those will be confirmed next week.

For Block I and Block II Only -
Current Event – Due Wednesday

For Wednesday, find two current events that relate to two of our potential debate topics. Bring in the articles and be able to explain if they are supporting (pro) the topic as stated, or against (con) the topic as stated. For example, if the topic is #7. – The Death Penalty Should be Abolished – find an article about the death penalty and figure out if the writer supports (pro) or does NOT support (con) the position that the death penalty should be abolished.

Block I

We wrote a short response to characterization or setting as observed in The Outsiders and continued with our analysis of our debate topics. For tomorrow, please complete the current event (above).

Period 3 -
We finished The Outsiders and completed a short, written response.

Block 2

We finished The Outsiders and wrote a compare/contrast on characterization or setting. We divided into our debate teams; due Wednesday - your 14 possible topcs (pro/con statements); two current events related to two different topics, and your statement as to whether your article/news story supports a pro or con position on the topic. Debate groups should have their topics identified.

Block I
We turned in our Constitution projects (either hard copies of saved them to my drop box) - we finished the Outsiders and discussed charaterization. We began our debate unit by analyzing our topics and determining the two sides to our 14 possible topics. This analysis should be completed by the beginning of class on Wednesday.

Period 3
Almost finished Outsiders - focus on charaterization and setting....you will be comparing the novel/movie in an inclass write....

Block 2

Remember that your Constitution PPTs/Flipbooks are due on MONDAY! We will have some lab time to tie up loose ends and submit them to the class folder.

Period 3
No weekend homework! If you were absent for the vocab test, makeups will be on Tuesday during homeroom. Some of you still need to turn in your Compare/Contrast essay - if this is you, make sure you email it or turn in a hard copy by Monday!

Block II
Constitution PPTS/Flipbooks due on Monday; there will be an opportunity to turn it in to the class folder in the lab on Monday.

We went over the 6 vocab words for the quiz tomorrow - you will be writing complex sentences and identifying parts of speech for each word. Be prepared!We finished Chapter 9 and half of Chapter 10 in the Outsiders.
For Social Studies - the due date for the Constitution Flipbooks/PPTs was changed to Monday, January 10. There will be work time in class for this on Thursday and Friday.

We finished Chapter 8 in the Outsiders and reviewed our vocab words for a quiz this Thursday. The words reviewed were: contemptuously, imploringly, gallantly, indignant, wistfully, premonition. Know the definitions as they were used in the novel and the part of speech (POS). Be prepared to write sentences using these words on Thursday.

The Constitution Flip Book project was introduced. It is due this Friday! I have attached a copy of the assignment under the files tab. I suggest visiting Congress.org or whitehouse.gov for help with this. There will be two class work periods for this project.
