We took a quiz over Chapter 7.4 in Social Studies, read our class novel out loud in class; took notes on Chapter 7.5 for Social Studies and practiced identifying sentence fragments and run ons in our grammar lesson.

Period 3
We read aloud in our class novel and completed a compare/contrast activity with the characters in the book.

Block II
We took a quiz over Chapter 7.4 in Social Studies, read our class novel out loud in class and created character profiles and burning questions for each of the main characters; took notes on Chapter 7.3 and 7.5 for Social Studies and began to prep for our Unit 3 test (chapters 6 and 7) scheduled for Monday.

Welcome to Trimester II! Here is what you need to know for today!

Block I
Complete your battle maps of the Revolutionary War; finish question #6 (find one example of two of the literary devices listed) on page 139 in your Lit book and make sure you found the characters, plot, setting and conflict int the poem about Paul Revere.

Period 3

Block II
We read about the "Midnight Ride of Paul Revere" in our Lit Books (page 134)- for tomorrow, finish question #6 on page 139 (find an example for each of the four poetic elements) and make sure you found the characters, plot, setting and conflict.

For Social Studies, we took notes on Thomas Paine, watched a few School House Rock videos to refresh our memories about the Revolution and analyzed the Declaration of Independence. Complete your analysis by tomorrow and also highlight any use of propaganda in the document. Be prepared to defend/explain your choices!

We worked in our JA books on finding minimums and maximums for our budgets - you should have completed pages 93, 94 and 99 in class today and Wednesday. We turned in our final Light in the Forest Chapter 16 papers; we also reviewed and worked on our Tri 1 Reading Projects (due on Monday at the beginning of class!)

In JA, we are working on the simulation; you should have completed through page 112 - the sections on Home Improvement and Food will not need specifics (just use an average of the min/max found on page 93. Also, remember that you will need 5 days of stock prices for page 95 and 96.

We compared and contrasted the strengths and weaknesses of the Colonists and the British at the start of the Revolutionary War; we discussed the final chapter of Light in the Forest" and discussed the final paper you will write (Chapter 16). I have attached all the necessary documents under the documents tab. Also, remember that your final reading projects are due on November 15 and your reading logs are due on November 19.

We completed reading the last chapter in Light in the Forest; we began working on your final paper (Chapter 16). You will also have computer time tomorrow to work on this assignment. I have attached the documents/assignment sheets; you can find those under the Documents tab.

We worked in the Writing lab for one period on our Light in the Forest Chapter 16 (the final paper for this novel). 6th period we began a simulation in JA with our new table groups.

We completed Laurie's budget on pages 74 - 75 in our JA books. We read Light in the Forest chapters 14 and 15 and began brainstorming for our final project on this novel - writing Chapter 16! I have posted the assignment on the blog - just click on the files tab. We reviewed our final reading projects and turn in dates for our independent reading logs (November 15 for the projects/November 19th for the logs).

Om Social Studies, we completed our Colonial Unrest grids and discussed reasons for colonial unrest - we rated them from a low of 1 to a high of 9 points.

Period 3 -
We completed Chapter 14 in Light in the Forest - we will finish the book tomorrow and begin on our final project for the novel. We reviewed our final reading projects and turn in dates for our independent reading logs (November 15 for the projects/November 19th for the logs). I have posted the assignment for your reading projects on the blog - just click on the files tab.

Block 2 -
We compared/contrasted strengths and weaknesses held by the the British vs the Colonists at the beginning of the Revolutionary War. We then changed seats and completed reading Chapters 14 and 15 in Light in the Forest. The final assignment was handed out - you will be writing Chapter 16! Block 2

We read silently; completed a brainstorm on family budgets in our JA books; completed our grids on Colonial Unrest and ranked the different events in order of "irritation to a colonist". We read Chapter 13 in Light in the Forest.

We took our vocab test and completed Lesson #2 on Credit in our JA books. (Pages 19-21). We took notes on the French and Indian War in Social Studies and looked at analyzed maps showing North America before and after the war. We also listened to a short story, "The Monkey's Paw" in our Lit books.

We reviewed vocab (test Tuesday!) - listened to "The Monkey's Paw" and discussed superstitions (related to the reading!)

Block II
We took our vocab test; read silently and discussed a current event in our small groups. We worked on our JA curriculum - we picked stock portfolios in small groups and will compare how we did next Friday!

Period 1 - We turned in our final memoirs and shared them (along with cookies) with our classmates. We went over the vocabulary for the quiz on Friday and practiced with the definitions. We also nearly completed Chapter 8 in Light in the Forest. Junior Achievement books were passed out. For tomorrow; complete reading Chapter 8 in your L/F books and complete the pre-test in your JA book. We will correct it in class tomorrow.
Period 3

We turned in our final memoirs and shared them (along with cookies!) with our classmates.We wrote compliments to the writers about specific things that they did well in their memoirs. We corrected our JA pre-test and uncovered some financial geniuses in our midst. No worries - the rest of you will soon also develop amazing financial skills! Homework for tonight: Finish Chapter 7-8 worksheet and reading for Light in the Forest and complete page 9 in your JA Book. Hint: to void a check, add the amount back in the credit column, add it in your ledger and then subtract the new amount as a new transaction in the debit column! Good luck!

We read in our independent novels and practiced our first "commercials". Everyone will do one impromptu commercial about a favorite book this trimester. We read Chapter 7 in Light in the Forest - Chapter 6 questions are due tomorrow. These are the questions you received last Friday. The Chapter 7-8 questions will not be turned in; you will have the vocabulary test for those words on Friday of this week (October 29t).

We went to the computer lab to finish printing (after printing problems on Friday) - remember: 2 copies of your memoir are due tomorrow - one with the rough draft attached for me to grade, and one that you will share with your classmates tomorrow.

The blog is back! There was a disruption in the log ins due to a computer problem, but all is fixed and the blog is back in business!

This week, (October 18-22) is busy! We will be completing rough drafts of our memoirs by Wednesday, October 20th - there will be peer editing in class on Wednesday, so everyone in all classes should have a completed, printed rough draft at the beginning of class. We will have Writing Lab for one class period (all LA classes) on Tuesday, October 19, so plan on that time! Thursday, October 21, will be our final Writing Lab for our memoirs - the final drafts are due on Tuesday, October 26 - If you are not able to complete your memoir during the Writing Lab, make sure to bring a flash drive so you can complete it at home. We will have a reading/sharing time in class on that day - let's plan to bring treats and make it a celebration! You will be reading and commenting on each other's memoirs at that time.
For my Social Studies classes - we will complete Chapter 5 this week - test review sheets will be available in class on Thursday, and the Chapter 4-5 Test will be given on Friday, October 22. It will be an open note test.

Finally, you will all receive information on the JA field trip this week. $15 is needed for each of you to help with the expenses - see me if this is a problem for you. The bookkeeper has asked that these payments are made to her Wednesday through Friday of this week. Please make checks payable to PLMS. Parents - we need volunteers! Block I
We turned in our 4.1 and 4.2 notes for Social Studies; finished our Colonial Advertisements and began sharing them with the other groups. We had Writing Lab; our Memoir Brainstorms were checked off, we shared them with a partner and they wrote questions that we needed to answer in our writing pieces. We began typing our rough drafts. We read Light in the Forest, Chapter 3. On your own, read Chapter 4 and complete the questions by the beginning of class on Friday. For Social Studies, complete your portion of the Colonial Brochure - due in class tomorrow. Also, if you have not already finished your notes for 4.1 and 4.2 and your Memoir Brainstorm, you need to have those completed by tomorrow as well!The political cartoons are not due at the beginning of class on Wednesday - that has been changed to the END of class. We read in our independent novels and talked about how we should be half way through our 1000 pages by next Tuesday - mid tri! We worked on our memoir chronologies. In Social Studies, we took notes on Chapter 4.1 and 4.2 in Social Studies - the Pilgrims have finally arrived! The notes should be completed by Tuesday. Next week - the British Colonies!

Period 3

We read Chapters 1 and 2 in Light in the Forest; we reviewed our vocab words and worked on our webs for our memoirs.

Period 3
We began our novel study of Light in the Forest, by reading Chapters 1 and 2 out loud in class. We continued working on our memoir writing project - we will continue working on that in class tomorrow.

Block II
We took a quiz over Chapter 1 in Light in the Forest and read Chapter 2 out loud in class. We reviewed our vocab words from the novel and worked on our memoir webs and brainstorms.

We shared our political cartoons and analysis sheets with our table groups. We decided on our favorites from each group and shared those with the whole class. We had our regular library visit to renew and check out books - so far, no fines yet! We also wrote thank you notes to our parent volunteers with our Reading and Writing in the Workplace panel and checked our our Light in the Forest novels.

We checked out our new class novels, completed rough drafts for our thank you notes and visited the library for check out and renewal.

Block I
We completed our Light in the Forest Jigsaw activity and turned in our sections. We read the short memoir in our Literature books, "Jalapenos Anyone?" and discussed it's strengths and weaknesses. We began working on creating webs for our own memoirs. Our webs are due on Thursday. We took our Chapter 3 quiz in Social Studies and discussed political cartoons in more detail. Our cartoons are due in class tomorrow!

Period 3

For Social Studies, we practiced Cornell notes and finished Chapter 1. We chose were we personally would have wanted to live in the 1200AD time period, and explained our choices in a short paragraph.

Block 1
We completed the writing activity from yesterday and looked for elements of plot in each others writing! Very creative ideas emerged! We also practiced taking Cornell notes again, this time for notes on the Middle Ages.

Period 3
We introduced elements of plot today and wrote stories after hearing an exposition (background story) read aloud. We identified the plot sequence in our partners short stories.

Block 2
We listened to some of each others' writing from yesterday and continued with your blitz through 1500 years of world history! Meanwhile, we are learning to take Cornell Notes! At the end of class, we decided where we would like to have lived if we were alive in 1200 AD. Some interesting responses emerged!

To be continued.....In Social Studies, we researched Native American Culture groups in our small groups and analyzed impact of environment on food and housing...No homework tonight except reading/finding books.

If you scored below a C on either test, you may make up the test grade for a maximum of a C during Homeroom time next Tuesday or Thursday. We analyzed our personality types today..were you a beaver, an otter, a lion or a golden retriever? To be continued on Monday!

We examined Native American Cultural Groups and thought about how where we live impacts what we eat, how we live and what we do. We also discussed the Iroquois League; did we think it was a good idea?

We read a newspaper article, analyzed it with our small groups and practiced filling out our reading logs for online/magazine articles.
We practiced for our Map/Geography Quiz on the states and landforms - the quiz will be tomorrow, so be prepared!

We reviewed political and physical maps of the United States and practiced identifying states and landforms in preparation for a quiz this Friday. We took notes on Chapter 18.4 and discussed differences between the North and South.
During second period, we continued to work on our CBA in the computer lab.

We read silently for 10 minutes in our independent reading books; discussed the rubric for our persuasive essay and went over in-text citations (use "Citation Machine"!); worked on our essays in the computer lab.

We worked in small groups to understand the North and South viewpoints - what did they REALLY think/believe!

We read about John Brown and talked about martyrs; we also analyzed the election that brought Abraham Lincoln to office.
For second period, we spent time in the computer lab working on our outlines/essays.

We read about the election that saw Lincoln voted into office and discussed how that happened. We also read about secession and why the South decided to leave the Union. Chapter 18.4)
For Language Arts, we continued work in the lab on our CBAs.

We worked in the lab on our Persuasive Essay during 3rd period - the outlines are due by the end of the period on Wednesday (Thursday for the Choir kids..)
Period 5 - 6
We read and talked about John Brown and States Rights issues - we spent most of 6th period in the lab working on our CBAs. We also received calendars listing major due dates/tests for the remainder of the school year.

We practiced taking the MSP and compared answers with the state key. We also finished watching Night John.

Period 5 - 6
We finished Night John, took a practice MSP test and went over the answers. We began our reformers posters - those are due on Wednesday. For those absent today, pick any reformer from Chapter 15 and follow the directions below:

We discussed our new in class book - To be a Slave and began Unit 9 in our lit books (Argument and Persuasion). We also spent one period in the computer lab working on our Westward Expansion project. We began our unit on Argument and Persuasion in our lit books! Remember to bring those books to class daily for the next few weeks. Tomorrow - make sure you have your independent reading book in class.

We reviewed our vocab words (41-49)- no test this week - those words will be on a test NEXT Friday. We practiced writing definitions and sentences. We read Chapter 24 in Tom Sawyer (the trial!) Thanks to Ian for playing the part of Injun Joe! In Social Studies, we completed our Louisiana Purchase maps.

Period 3
We read Tom Sawyer Chapter 23 and discussed what it was Twain was trying to say. We worked on our three assignments that are due tomorrow (Vocab, A Hero for All Seasons,and the comic strip of Chapter 22 - the joke played on the teacher).

Period 5 - 6
We read Chapter 27 out loud (great job to the readers today!) and discussed the next story line that was revealed. We practiced our vocab words (41-49)- sentences and definitions due tomorrow!

We listened to the CD of Tom Sawyer Chapter 23. We discussed what we think Twain was trying to tell us in that Chapter. Tomorrow - the trial!

In Social Studies, we completed our outlines and worked on our maps of Lewis and Clark's expedition and the Louisiana Purchase.

Period 3 -

Lots of assignments to finish up - we decided on Thursday for an absolute due date for everything! Here are the assignments:

Complete vocab definitions and sentences for words 50-59 (the test will be next week!)
Finish the comic strip for Chapter 22
Finish the handout on chivalry (A Hero for all Seasons). For that assignment, you are choosing seven elements of the chivalric code and checking off the ones that Tom Sawyer fulfills. We will check in on him at the end of the novel and see if he grew or changed!)

Period 5 - 6
We started with SSR - all reading pages are due by Wednesday, March 17 - for Trimester 2.

We read Tom Sawyer Chapter 25 and began working on conflicts in the novel in small groups. Vocab words 41-49 were assigned; the test will be on Friday. Vocab words, definitions and sentences are due this Thursday. Also due Thursday: the map of the Louisiana Purchase.

If you aren't sure your notes are complete, you may take notes from Chapter 10.4 and 10.5 in the textbook and use those for the test.

First period was an assembly for high school registration!
Period 2 - We worked on our Tom Sawyer "Victim" worksheets - these will be due tomorrow! We also practiced our vocab words - words and definitions due tomorrow at the beginning of class. Test will be on Friday this week!

Period 3 - We read Chapter 17 in Tom Sawyer; discussed the "victim mentality" of four characters and worked on vocab words 41-49 - the test will be on Friday this week!

Period 5 - 6 - We read Chapters 18 and 19 in Tom Sawyer and discussed/role played the drama going on between characters. We predicted what Becky might do when they all arrived back at school after lunch!
For Social Studies, we took notes on Chapter 10.5 and discussed the confusion the existed after the Washington left office. We will finish up tomorrow, review on Thursday and have our Chapter 10 test this Friday! No vocab test this week!

We read Chapter 11 in Tom Saywer in small readingn groups today and then discussed as a large group at the end of class. In Social Studies, we created our political parties, working on our party platforms, symbols and names.

Period 3
We took a Vocab test and wrote a reflection on Chapter 7; we read Chapter 8 silently and completed the worksheet on that Chapter in class. If you did NOT complete the worksheet, it is due on Monday at the beginning of class.

Period 5 -6
We turned in the Chapter 9-11 questions, took the vocab test and read Chapter 12 out loud in class; please finish by Monday. We reviewed our Unit Focus Quesions (UFQ's) and discussed how they would be used in our scored discussion at the end of the unit.

Period 1 and 2
We read Chapter 8 in Tom Sawyer silently or in small reading groups outloud, and answered a set of questions. We received our next set of vocab words (words 21-29)- there will be a test on those words this Friday, due to the SAT testing on Thursday. Period 2, we went to the library and took some online political surveys to determine what we believed as individuals about political issues.

We read Chapter 5 in small reading groups - we answered a series of questions about the Chapter. We also received our next set of vocab words (words 21-29)- there will be a test on those words this Friday, due to the SAT testing on Thursday.
Period 5 - 6
We read Tom Sawyer Chapter 10; revisted our UFQ's and did reflective writing on superstitions we might practice(d)- we also completed Daybook pages 210-219....For Social Studies, we took some political surveys and will begin researching political parties tomorrow.

Period 1 - 2
We completed Chapter 7 in Tom Sawyer and discussed sarcasm in writing. In Social Studies, we completed our group posters on Hamilton and Jefferson, compared and contrasted the two men and charted what we found out. Finally, we began looking at the political spectrum; more to come on Monday! Bring your ASB cards to class Monday morning!
Period 3
We completed Chapter 4 in Tom Sawyer; we wrote to a prompt in class for the first 10 minutes, explaining what we do when bored. Monday, we will read Chp. 5 and see what Tom does while bored!
Period 5 -6

We read Chapter 9 outloud in class; completed pages 207-0 in our Daybooks; in Social Studies, we finished our posters, compared and contrasted Jefferson and Hamilton, checked our knowledge to see if we could attribute a set of quotes to the correct gentleman; read Chapter 10.2 and looked for information on money and banking (our last point of contrast between Hamilton and Jefferson). We answered questions on page 309 in our Social Studies books - #1, #2 (only the Bank of the United States),#3 (only bonds, tariffs and National Bank) and #4 (a and b).

We read Chapter 5 in Tom Sawyer today and discussed ways we keep ourselves from being bored in places where we have to sit and listen. For Social Studies, we began working in groups to create posters about either Thomas Jefferson or Alexander Hamilton; we will look at their ideas and begin to understand the philosophies of our political parties.

Period 3 - Still presenting! We will finish tomorrow and read more in our Tom Sawyer novels.

Period 5 - 6

We discussed Chapter 9.4 - creating a graphic organizer for citizenship. We discussed how people become US citizens and the responsibilities that go along with citizenship. Our Social Studies quiz for Chapter 8 and 9 will be this coming Thursday. We worked in the computer lab on our expository essays - due tomorrow! Also, we were assigned words 11-20 on our TomSawyer vocab list; the quiz will be on Friday.

We worked in the lab this morning on our Amendment assignment. We will have some time 1st period tomorrow to finish up, then we will present them to the class during 2nd period. We read Chapter 3 in TomSawyer and reviewed our vocab. words for tomorrow. We will have the vocab test at the beginning of first period tomorrow.

Period 3 - A work day in the lab for our Expository essays!

We read TomSawyer Chapter four out loud in class...reviewed our vocab for the quiz tomorrow and turned in our Social Studies homework. We had 6th period in the lab to work on our Amendment assignment (due tomorrow!) and the expository essay due next Wednesday. Remember the vocab test tomorrow!

Period 1 and 2
We listened to Tom Sawyer Chapter 2 and talked about the difference between work and play. We also filled our our active reading papers on the characters we have encountered so far, and discussed their relationship to Tom.
In Social Studies, we went over our Amendment assignment - it is due on Friday, but there will be some time to work on it tomorrow in the lab. Also, we need to remember that we have a vocab test on FRIDAY and an expository essay due next Wednesday!

Period 3 -
We took a short quiz over Tom Sawyer Chapter 1 and brainstormed our definitions of work and play. We listened/read Chapter 2; tomorrow we will work on our expository essays in the lab - Friday we have a vocab test over the first 10 words in our packet (the alphabetical list).

Period 5 and 6
We read Tom Sawyer Chapter 3 outloud; analyzed/compared Tom's behavior with that or our peers/ (Puppy Love!); worked on Social Studies Vocab (#1 on page 289 and #1 on page 295 - due Thursday).
Tomorrow we will have one period in the lab to work on our Amendment Assignment or our Expository Essay. We will also have one lab time to work on Friday. Upcoming due dates: Amendment Assignment - Due Friday; Vocab Test - Due Friday; Expository Essay; Due Wednesday. The Expository Essay demos will take place beginning next Friday, Jan. 22.
