For All Classes! The vocab test will be given on Friday of this week, due to the Reading and Writing in the Workplace presentation and panel activity on Thursday.

We read in our independent reading books, reviewed our vocab words and worked on our dialogues with snapshots and thoughtshots. We will present them in class tomorrow!
For Social Studies, we completed notes on Chapter 3.1.

Block 1

We visited the library and picked out new books; remember to fill out a reading log for each book you read! We practiced our vocab words and will have our first vocab quiz Thursday, (tomorrow!) We nearly completed outlining (Cornell Style!) Chapter 1.4 in Social Studies and checked off our grids for the explorers; we will review for the test on Friday tomorrow!

Period 3
After a library visit, we practiced our vocab words for our quiz on Thursday. We also read each other's character sketches and turned them in.

Block 2
We visited the library; reviewed for our vocab test tomorrow and shared our character sketches in small groups.

For Social Studies, we had our notes on Chapter 4.1 checked off, saw a short presentation on the Columbian Exchange and completed the Geo Unit on the "Exchange" in our Social Studies book - pages 56-59

Block 1

We analyzed the Spanish, Portuguese and English explorers (Chapter 2.3) by making a grid - due tomorrow at the beginning of class!
In LA - we wrote two character sketches after talking about "writing small" - most of you finished these in the computer lab. They are due tomorrow at the beginning of class.

We reviewed the Explorers from our homework and outlined Chapter 1.4 with Cornell Notes. We practiced writing character sketches in the computer lab and will share our sketches with the class tomorrow.

We created fake "facebook" pages for Christopher Columbus; completed reading "The Ransom of Red Chief" and completed a group activity on irony and conflict. We practiced vocab for this week; there will be a quiz on Thursday.

Block 2
We compared our data pages on Columbus with a powerpoint and created a chart of the European explorers who followed in his wake. Tomorrow we will finish learning about the Columbian exchage. We also completed reading "The Ransom of Red Chief" and completed a group activity on irony and conflict. We practiced vocab for this week; there will be a quiz on Thursday.

Block 1
We read in our independent novels and discussed conflict we encountered in our reading. Was it internal or external? We listened to a story from our Lit Book (The Elevator on page 24 and then analyzed where the plot lines - where did it end?

For Social Studies, we practiced Cornell notes and finished Chapter 1. We chose were we personally would have wanted to live in the 1200AD time period, and explained our choices in a short paragraph.

Period 3

Block 1
We completed the writing activity from yesterday and looked for elements of plot in each others writing! Very creative ideas emerged! We also practiced taking Cornell notes again, this time for notes on the Middle Ages.

Period 3
We introduced elements of plot today and wrote stories after hearing an exposition (background story) read aloud. We identified the plot sequence in our partners short stories.

Block 2
We listened to some of each others' writing from yesterday and continued with your blitz through 1500 years of world history! Meanwhile, we are learning to take Cornell Notes! At the end of class, we decided where we would like to have lived if we were alive in 1200 AD. Some interesting responses emerged!

We discussed and read about the elements of plot in our literature books (page 24). We then wrote our own stories using a prompt Mrs. H gave us in class. We will finish those tomorrow in class.

For Social Studies, we took notes on the Middle Ages. We took them "Cornell style".

We discussed conflict in literature and compared internal to external conflict in our small groups.


Block 2

In Social Studies, we continued our background blitz and nearly finished the Middle Ages!

Block I

We began our independent reading program today - most of you had your books in class! Remember to bring your books daily from now on. We discussed "Big Questions" from our Lit Book (pages 2 -3) and related them to our own reading books. We also began analyzing "What makes a good story". To be continued.....In Social Studies, we researched Native American Culture groups in our small groups and analyzed impact of environment on food and housing...No homework tonight except reading/finding books.

We took our first Social Studies quiz today on the states and the geographical features. If you scored below a C on either test, you may make up the test grade for a maximum of a C during Homeroom time next Tuesday or Thursday. We also listened to a short story and talked about metacognition in reading.

Period 3

We analyzed our personality types today..were you a beaver, an otter, a lion or a golden retriever? To be continued on Monday!

Block 2

We took our first Social Studies quiz today on the US states and geographical features. If you scored below a C on either test, you may make up the test grade for a maximum of a C during Homeroom time next Tuesday or Thursday.

We examined Native American Cultural Groups and thought about how where we live impacts what we eat, how we live and what we do. We also discussed the Iroquois League; did we think it was a good idea?

We listened to a presentation in the library and checked out books - your independent reading books are due in class on Monday, September 13! We will be filling out your first reading logs at that time and spending a few minutes reading! We read a newspaper article, analyzed it with our small groups and practiced filling out our reading logs for online/magazine articles.
We practiced for our Map/Geography Quiz on the states and landforms - the quiz will be tomorrow, so be prepared!
Period 3 -

We took our STAR reading assessment in the library. We discussed independent reading and received our first reading logs in class. We will have our first visit to the library to check out books tomorrow! Remember your ASB cards! You will need an independent reading book in class DAILY starting this coming Monday. In Social Studies, we reviewed geographic (physical) features and states; quiz over that information will be on Friday.

We also read an article on study habits from the NYTimes; we analyzed what the author said, looked at who the author was and discussed our thoughts (did we agree or disagree) in our small groups. We filled out a reading log for the article as an example (and yes...you can count those pages!) Remember - Social Studies map test coming up this Friday!

We shared our timelines during a class circle time; we also completed our personality surveys and set some academic goals for the coming school year. We reviewed political and physical maps of the United States and practiced identifying states and landforms in preparation for a quiz this Friday. Note: the quiz was scheduled for Thursday but as a class we decided to move the quiz to Friday. Remember to bring your ASB cards tomorrow when we go to the Library for STAR testing.

We checked out Literature Books today, finished our planner review began working on our Social Studies maps! We also visited the Computer Lab to work on our personal timelines (Due Tuesday!) ; many of us logged on for the first time! We will have more time to work on our timelines tomorrow, as well as our maps in preparation for our mapping and geographic features quiz next Thursday.

Block 1 -

We handed out parent letters with optional "homework" for parents - no due date for that assignment, parents! It is truly optional and can be completed whenever and if you wish!

In class today: we reviewed our planners and analyzed a current event in our small groups. Be on the lookout for iteresting current events to analyze/discuss in the future!

We reviewed our timeline project and scheduled lab time tomorrow for brainstorming/writing. Finally, Social Studies books were checked out.
