Block I
   All reading logs should be turned in at this point! If some of you forgot them on Friday, this is the day you need to turn them in! For Social Studies - any make up CBA presentations will occur today and tomorrow. Also, if there are any corrections to your final drafts, those need to be submitted by Wednesday of this week.

Period 3
    We are continuing with your persuasive presentations today and tomorrow. All reading logs should be turned in by tomorrow at the latest! Your final persuasive essays are being graded and will be returned to you by Wednesday.

Block 3
    All final assignments have been turned in! You will receive your final grades by Friday of this week. Your CBA's have been returned  and your presentation grades are in process. You should have those results back by this Friday (or maybe Thursday!)

For tomorrow - be prepared for an in class timed write on your LitCircle books; this will be based on the discussion questions you talked about today in your LitCircles. There will be an oral spelling test on the 12 words we have been looking at for the last two weeks - Their, there, they're, your, you're, definitely, defiantly, character, caricature, precipice, precipitation and precipitous.

  •     How did Lincoln demonstrate his desire for unification in this speech?

  •    How did Lincoln see the Civil War as an opportunity for the nation to bring forth a "new birth of freedom" (or liberty for all), and why was this necessary for the survival of American self-government?

  •       The Declaration of Independence says "all men are created equal" is a "self-evident" truth, suggesting that human equality is obvious to any unbiased person. Why does Lincoln at Gettysburg call human equality a "proposition," meaning something that needs to be proven? (Hint: What does the Civil War suggest about American convictions in the 1860s regarding human equality?)

   Parent permission slips for your LitCircle books should all be turned in! Please turn them in ASAP if you have not turned it in!
   For Social Studies: We are working on topic selection for our CBAs this week. We had computer lab time today to identify sources. Remember - all sources and in text citations MUST be in MLA format. We also took notes on Chapter 19.1 in our Social Studies books and identified the strengths and weaknesses of the North and the South going into the Civil War.

Period 3 -
   We worked on topic selection for our persuasive essays; also, you each received a permission slip for your lit circle books. Please have your parents sign these and return no later than Tuesday, May 7th.

For Social Studies, we are continuing working on our debate unit - debates will take place next Thursday and Friday, Feb. 9 and 19.

Block 2
Tech essays are due tomorrow(Thursday)! Bring any needed materials to class with you; also, please have a copy of your essay ready to be read and turned in. We practiced our vocab words today; also, remember you should be halfway through your required reading pages for this trimester; you should have about 500 pages completed. Don't forget to keep your reading logs filled out and up to date, along with required parent signatures for all books you read!

Block 3
LA - Tech essays are due Monday, February 6th. Please refer to your rubrics for grading information. For Warriors, complete Chapter 15 for tonight and write THREE questions for discussion tomorrow. Make sure you are NOT writing any knowledge level questions for this assignment.

For Social Studies, continue with your work on the debate unit. We have three more in class work periods to collaborate with your group and strategize!

We defined the final four of our 8 vocab words for this week; we worked on our tech essays and determined that we will share the essays in our table groups. All essays are due THIS THURSDAY! We discussed our upcoming debates and determined that groups 5/6/7 will debate next Thursday, February 9th and groups 1/2/3/4 will debate on Friday, February 10.

We began studying 8 new words for Vocabulary - these are continuing to be words we will encounter when we begin our Tom Sawyer study in the near future. We continued working on both our Tech Essays and our Debate Projects. The tech essays are due this Thursday, and the Debates will be held next Thursday and Friday, February 9th and 10th.

We continued reading and analyzing our novel, Warriors Don't Cry - please read Chapters 12 and 13 for tomorrow and finish the handout on Conflict. You must complete all boxes EXCEPT you will only need one box in the Character against Nature column.

We began working on our Tech Essays, due next Monday, Feb. 6th.

We read two accounts about Dodgeball in our Lit Books (985 through 990) and completed the grid for comparing persuasive techniques on page 991. For Social Studies, we discussed the three branches of government; completed a work sheet analysis of checks and balances and began digging into the Bill of Rights. Complete the handout on the Bill of Rights for tomorrow.

We completed Chapter 9 in the Outsiders and discussed foreshadowing as used in this novel. For Social Studies, we looked at the conflicts facing the framers of the Constitution, discussed compromise and examined how they dealt with some of the major problems facing the nation. For tomorrow: make sure you complete the handout you received in class!

Remember that you have an Independent Reading Requirement of 1000 pages for this trimester; you should complete your pages by March 9, 2012!
