For ALL CLASSES - HERE IS THE WRITING ASSIGNMENT!!!


Expository Writing Tri 2
Technical Writing Assignment #1
Henderson LA/SS 2009-10

The Assignment
 Write a technical piece explaining how to do something. It must be school appropriate and it must be able to be done in our classroom. Ideas from past years; making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich; the perfect golf swing; how to make a perfect paper airplane; a ballet lesson; how to put on eye shadow; how to be the perfect date; how to make a root beer float; how to tie a fly (for fishing!); how to wax a pair of skis; the list is only limited by your skills or creativity.
 You will read your paper aloud to someone else, who will then attempt to follow your instructions/explanation
 1-2 Pages typed; single or double spaced. Size 14 font. Conventions (spelling, grammar, capitalization, etc.) should be followed nearly perfectly!
 You must include an introduction
 You must include a glossary for technical language/words used (see attached example)

All essays are due on Wednesday, January 20th, 2010. Periods 1 and 5 will have their last day in the lab (for printing) on Tuesday – Period 3 will have their last day in the lab on Wednesday. We will begin presenting them on Friday, January 22. They will be worth 40 points each and will be earned in the following categories:
Introduction : – 5 points
Writing and directions clear and detailed – 15 points
Glossary of technical terms – 5 points
Conventions; (spelling; grammar; capitalization; typed; correct font;) – 10 points
Reading aloud of essay/ Participation (being an outstanding audience member) – 5 points

There may be some extra credit points awarded for being a willing and capable volunteer! Volunteers must take their jobs seriously and do their best! Points could be lost if volunteers intentionally do not carry out their duties!!!


Period 1 and 2
We continued our work on the Constitution and compared the answers we came up with in class. We will finish that activity tomorrow. In LA, we began work on our Expository Papers; those are due next Wednesday, January 20th. These are our major writing pieces for Trimester 2.

Period 5 - 6
We completed our packets on the Constitution and were each assigned an amendment to illustrate/explain for Friday. We also began work on our expository writing pieces (see above for the complete assignment); we should have a topic identified by tomorrow, but you may change it again until Thursday. Refer to the rubrics also handed out today for additional details on how this will be graded.
