April 29, 2011

Block I
We participated in our LitCircles; we discussed characterization and completed a set of group discussion questions. In Social Studies, we watched a ppt on the Civil War and continued to work on our Civil War Battle Maps. The maps are due on Monday; also, please complete definitions of the following by Tuesday>

Block I
We analyzed our advertisements as to their persuasive techniques; we also determined which persuasive techniques would be most appropriate for our research topics. In SOcial Studies, we began creating a visual of the Civil War - the map will be due on Monday, May 2. For your CBA (Research Paper); your first two paragraphs (the Intro and the Background Paragraph) are due on Tuesday. For tomorrow; make sure you have read the required pages for your LitCircle groups!

Period 3
We continued with our unit on Persuasion. We analyzed a short story in our lit books, and then concentrated on comparing two different views on animals/zoos.
We will complete the analysis in class tomorrow. For Orchestra and Choir members; keep up with your LitCircle reading requirements. Next LitCircle meeting will be on Monday!

Block II
We analyzed two writing pieces as to their persuasive techniques and we began creating battle maps of the Civil War. The maps are due on Monday!

Block I
We discussed different persuasive techniques - for tomorrow, bring in an ad and fill out the answers to the four questions on your assignment sheet. For Social Studies,on the back of your maps,list the advantages and disadvantages held by the North and South at the beginning of the Civil War. Also, list the strategies that each side planned to use at the beginning of the war.

Period 3
Great job with hot seating our first three characters! Orchestra and Choir members - make sure you keep up with your Lit Circle groups while you are out of town.

Block II
We looked at different persuasive techniques that could be incorporated in your CBAs. (see lit book pages 964 and 965)

We checked off our sources (in MLA format) while we worked on our Civil War Battle maps.

Please complete your assigned Lit Circle reading for tomorrow. For Social Studies, complete the following assignment: Read pages 569-575 in your Social Studies book. Explain the following three subjects and how they brought the US closer to the Civil War; John Brown, Abraham Lincoln and the Crittenden Plan. Answer questions 1,3,and 4 on page 575.
For LA - find 5 credible sources and put them in MLA format by Wednesday!

We compared the characters in our Lit Circle books; make sure you read your page requirements by the next Lit Circle meetings on Tuesday, April 26. In Social Studies, we worked on identifying our topics for the CBA (Classroom based assessment in Civics) - your position statements and signed parent permissions slips are due on Monday!

Period 3
We worked on identifying our topics for the persuasive essays and practiced writing position statements on our various topic choices. Parent permissions slips are due on Monday. We also are studying the art of persuastion - please bring in your advertisements/analysis (the four questions on the small piece of paper) to analyze on Monday. Also - the next Lit Circle meetings will occur Tuesday - make sure you have met your reading requirements by that date!

Block II
We wrote our first "one pagers" for our Lit Circle books today. Block I
We completed our second Lit Circle discussion group session. In Social Studies, we discussed the legal issues surrounding slavery (the Dred Scott decision) and compared that to modern day slavery. For tomorrow; we will finish deciding on our topics for our CBA's.

Period 3
We completed our second Lit Circle discussion group sessions. We are planning book related activities for our book groups for next Wednesday. Stay tuned!

Block I
We completed reading a Sound of Thunder and finished our question writing activity. We discussed our lesson on the reformers of the 1800's - your list of 9 reformers and the areas of society they wished to reform is due on Monday. (See April 14 post for addtional details). We continued with Chapter 18.3 in Social Studies; we took notes and will continue that on Monday.

Period 3
We began our independent reading time on the new schedule today - have your book in class every Monday/Wednesday/Friday for this trimester. We completed reading Ray Bradbury's A Sound of Thunder -- exellent job on your questions and responses!

Block II

We learned about different types of questioning, in preparation for our Lit. Circle Unit. We discussed questions that are "right there" and those that are "under the surface"; we read aloud a short story (Sound of Thunder by Bradbury) in class, and then constructed questions that fit the different categories.

In Social Studies, we took notes on Chapter 18 via a ppt presentation and looked through our books (pages 461-470) to identify different problems in pre-Civil War America and the reformers/organizations that addressed those issues.

Period 3

We learned about inference today, reading a story (The Wife's Tale) together and then looking for clues/evidence in the reading to help us figure out exactly what happened. In Social Studies, we discussed more about the institution of slavery and watched/discussed the story of Night John. For tomorrow; make sure you have your ASB card if you want to check out a book from the library. If not, make sure to have your independent reading book in class with you!

Welcome back from Spring Break! Here is what we did today!

Block I
We turned in permission slips for our Lit Circle books (if you didn't already turn yours in, please do so tomorrow!) and turned in our Tom Sawyer books. We began our unit on the Civil War, taking notes on a ppt and taking your own notes from our SS book by filling in the information under the headings on pages 440, 442 and 443. (Life Under Slavery, Slave Culture and Challenging Slavery). You should have at least 5-6 bullet points under each heading; complete by tomorrow!
We also began viewing Night John, a movie depicting life on a southern plantation.

Period 3
We completed three more scored discussions and also discussed our thoughts about reading Tom Sawyer.

Block II
