November 30, 2009

Period 1 and 2

We turned in our reading logs today and completed our reflections in class. We re-visited the pre-Revolution discussion we had last week, and looked at the Declaration of Independence; we discussed the meaning of primary source document and why it is important to know what these are and how to read them.

Period 3 - We wrote reflections and turned in our reading logs for Trimester 1. We also practiced our reading skills with an in class reading of one of our independent reading books.

Period 5 and 6

We finally finished those reading projects - great job, class! They were really creative and gave us a lot of new books to consider reading for the future!

We reviewed the definition of primary source documents and looked at some excerpts from the Declaration of Independence. We received a handout on the Declaration; questions attached are due on Wednesday. In addition, read page 193 in your Social Studies book and answer question 5 on page 193. I modified the question for you...you will only write one paragraph, not an entire essay, and focus on what you read on page 193 and what you learned as you answered the questions in the handout. These will all be due on Wednesday!

Period 1 and 2
We worked in small groups to rewrite some of Thomas Paine's writings in his pamphlet, Common Sense. We shared our results and also discussed how to make our small groups function well.

Period 3
We had our counselors visit and discuss harassment with us today...

Periods 5 and 6
We discussed the Revolutionary War period in our table groups, concentrating on seven important questions; we shared our conclusions with the group,and saw the different perspectives held by classmates. After this, we completed a reading in our daybooks (pgs. 87-91) and discussed where exactly a thesis could be located in a piece of persuasive writing.
Homework: Remember to bring your reading projects for tomorrow! Wednesday you will turn in reading logs documenting 1400 pages!

Period 1 and 2
We discussed our comparisons of the strengths and weaknesses of the British vs the Colonists going into the Revolutionary War. We weighted three categories of our choice, and then compared the results. We think we found a way for the Colonists to actually win!
We took notes from a powerpoint on Chapter 7.1 -
For LA, we practiced reading out loud with expression, and discussed character development.
Remember the important due dates for next week! Reading Projects are due on Tuesday!

Debates with Mr. Butler today!

Period 5 and 6

We discussed propaganda and Thomas Paine's Common Sense. We re-wrote some passages in our own words, and then analyzed the selections for the use of propaganda (using pages R24-24 in our literature books). Lots of good thinking and analysis!
Those who ended up with 6 correct answers for the Geo Bee were: Shayna Dieken, Rachel Catterall, and Brian Callans. If I missed anyone, or if you think you answered six correctly, see me on Monday! Remember: Reading Projects are due on Tuesday and reading pages are due Wednesday!

Period 1 -2

We reviewed our summaries of the taxes during prior to the Revolution. We will finish that activity tomorrow. We also discussed how we would feel if something were to happen to us that we thought was unfair.

We nearly finished the GeoBee; we went over the Independent Reading Project and our Independent Reading Pages: The Project is due next Tuesday, Nov. 24th and the Reading Pages (800) are due the Monday after Thanksgiving, November 30th.

Periods 1 and 2

We turned in our final JA projects and shared our dream jobs. We completed Light in the Forest Chapter 16 (our final writing assignment/assessment for the novel); if you did not complete this in class, it is due at the beginning of class on Tuesday. We finished with a Geography Bee - great job, kids!

Period 3

We turned in Light in the Forest Chapter 16 (our final written assignment/assessment for this novel). If you missed the deadline, please turn it in as soon as possible to keep from losing additional points. When finished, your novel should be turned in.

We also went over our independent reading program requirements and due dates; all reading pages are due by Monday after Thanksgiving, and your Reading Projects are due next Tuesday!

Period 5 - 6

We read each other's conclustions to Light in the Forest; we responded in writing to what we read with compliments/comments. We discussed groups in society; political, social, etc. and began looking at techniques of characterization and point of view (author). To be continued tomorrow.....

Period 1 and 2
We completed our novel, The Light in the Forest, and began our final project; each of you will write a conclusion, or Chapter 16. This needs to be one and a half pages, but you will be doing this writing in class. We will complete our papers in class on Monday, and turn in our novels as we finish.
Period 2 was spent in the library, completing our final JA projects. Several of you have already turned in your posters; the final due date is Monday, November 16. We will be sharing our completed posters with the class.

Period 3 - We spent a period in the computer lab finishing our final papers on The Light in the Forest. I have about 1/3 of your papers; those that didn't finish in class today need to complete these by the beginning of class on Monday.

Period 5 - 6
We turned in our JA posters today and shared our dream jobs with the class. We finished up with our Geo Bee! Four more rounds to go!

Period 1 and 2

We read Chapters 13 and almost all of Chapter 14 in class - we will finish page 165 and read to the end tomorrow. We will then begin our final L/F activity - writing Chapter 16!

Second period, we worked on our JA final projects in the lab - we will have some work time tomorrow; final due date will be Monday.

Period 3 -
Work time in the lab for Light in the Forest Chapter 16. These will be due on Monday; we will have work time tomorrow. I will work individually with those who are struggling with this assignment. Please bring your books and brainstorm sheets with you to class.

Period 5 and 6 We worked on our group "taxes and unrest" activity and decided why and what would have angered the colonists the most.

Period 1 and 2
We read Chapters 11 and 12 in Light in the Forest; we will finish the book in class on Thursday! In Social Studies, we reviewed our French and Indian War Maps and discussed the outcome of that conflict. We also read 6.2 and learned about the Proclamation that angered the colonists.
Finally, we spent some time in the computer lab working on our final JA projects, which are due on Friday! Don't forget!

Period 3 -
We finished Light in the Forest and ended with class discussion; each of you received the final essay question, which is to write Chapter 16 - what will happen next in the novel! You have a brainstorm sheet and an explanation of the assignment; I will provide class time on Thursday for typing....

Period 5 and 6

We reviewed the French and Indian War and Proclamation of 1763; we took a short quiz and found out that the new policy was actually FAKE - it was only used to help us see how people feel about unfair taxes, or taxes that they perceive to be unfair. We are trying to understand the emotions of revolution. We formed new table groups and began looking at some of the taxes levied on the colonists by the British, and how they reacted to them. We began to decide which ones were the most upsetting to the colonists.

We read Light in the Forest Chapter 11, and completed a worksheet/class discussion on Chapters 10 and 11. We completed our final (edited!) JA thank you notes, and went over the JA project, which will be due on this FRIDAY - NOVEMBER 13!

We finished Chapters 13 and 14 in class today! We will finish the book in class tomorrow and begin on our final essay question.

We reviewed our day at the Finance Park, wrote thank you notes to our parent volunteers, and received our final projects for the JA Finance Unit. These will be due and presented in class on Thursday, November 12. We also received our Final Reading Projects for Trimester 1. These are not due until November 24 (Tuesday). Your 1400 reading pages are due on November 25th...be prepared! We completed reading chapter 14 in Light in the Forest, and will finish the novel and receive our final writing assignment on Monday.

All students in my Period 1-2 and Period 5-6 classes; tomorrow is your JA field trip! Wear business casual clothing (no jeans!) and bring your lunch! Also, be at school on time - we leave soon after school starts! Period 3 - You will be going on the field trip on Friday with Mr. Butler!
Period 1 -2 We finished Chapter 10 and began Chapter 11 in Light in the Forest. We discussed the plot and setting.
In Social Studies, we finished up our JA unit, practicing our budgeting math and completing a crossword puzzle with financial terms. I think we are ready!

Period 3 -

We went to the library today; Mrs. H checked in with us about our independent reading and made sure we had the final project for Trimester 1. If you were absent today, see me if you need a copy! This assignment was passed out in class a week ago; it is due on November 23 - see me if you need an extra copy of the assignment! READING LOGS WILL BE COLLECTED ON NOVEMBER 25!

Period 5 -6

We reviewed yesterday's daybook assignment, and compared the reading selection to Light in the Forest. We read pages 43-46 in the daybook and discussed the importance of dialogue in revealing character. Due on Friday, if you didn't finish in class today!

No vocab test this week due to the JA field trips! We will have a vocab test again next week; next week's test will be Friday, due to the Veteran's Day holiday on Wednesday.

Period 1 and 2
We completed the Unit three test in our JA books and turned the books in to Mrs. H. We also completed a before and after map of the French and Indian War.
Period 3 -
We took our Chapter 9-10 quiz over Light in the Forest in class today. Tomorrow, we have library and will review our end of the trimester reading project.

Period 5-6
We took a quiz over Chapter 13 in L/f, completed Daybook Assignment (pages 89-92), completed a map of the before and after land claims of the French/Indian War and outlined Chapter 6.2. The map and outline are due tomorrow...

We read Light in the Forest Chapter 9 and Chapter 10 through page 102. We will finish in class tomorrow.
Homework is to complete your paragraphs on the French and Indian War...due tomorrow!

Period 3 -
We read Chapter 10 and part of 11 in class...complete Chapter 11 and be prepared for a quiz tomorrow over both of those chapters. Also, bring your independent reading book to class daily! We will have 10 minutes of independent reading each day to help make sure you meet your independent reading requirement by the end of the trimester!

Period 5 and 6
We went over the French and Indian War - the paragraphs are writing from a soldiers perspective are due on Tuesday! Please print CLEARLY or type your papers! We also went over budgeting philosophy in our JA books and practiced finding minimum and maximums on page 93. In addition, we took the Unit 3 Quiz.

In Light in the Forest, we read Chapter 13 in class (finish on your own if you didn't finish in class!) Quiz tomorrow over the reading!
